“A sheltered and misguided cynic,” interested only in his collection of antiques and contemptuous of the people he refers to as the “chiseling poor,” who refuses to contribute to the Metropolis Aid Fund despite his wealth until Superman poses as a genie in a magic lamp and uses his awesome powers to teach the spoiled Demarest the meaning of charity, and incidentally to apprehend the Crawfish Cole gang when they attempt to steal Demarest’s “magic” lamp from him (S No. 35/3, Jul/Aug 1945: “The Genie of the Lamp!”) (TGSB).
