Moa
A very large and tall flightless bird that became extinct in New Zealand some 500 or so years ago, probably because of habitat destruction and hunting (both the birds and their eggs).
A final lingering Moa is killed by hunter Jon Halaway but his piercing guilt over the destructive act causes him to bring its egg to Metropolis for study and safekeeping. The egg absorbs the hunter's energy through some mysterious life-process and hatches into a gigantic "super bird" that successfully battles Superman in an attempt to return to its ancestral homeland (Act No. 425/1, Jul 1973: "The Last Moa on Earth!").
