Captain Chate
The captain of a pearl-fishing merchant vessel that is one of a fleet owned by Elias Carp. When Carp is found murdered, there are four principal suspects, but Superman establishes that Chate killed Carp when Carp learned of his plans to scuttle his pearl vessel deliberately and then split the salvage rights with his accomplices on a nearby ship (S No. 33/3, Mar/Apr 1945: "The Compass Points to Murder!").
