Alice Norton

Inside cover page, Superman #96

Alice Norton is a young girl who was blinded in an auto accident. She wins the Daily Planet's "Lovely Child" contest and is awarded a visit with Superman. When Superman visits, she refuses to believe he is a real super hero, according to her mother, because her blindness has made her a "bitter, cynical child." In order to convince her of his powers, Superman takes her flying but she believes a helicopter and wires are behind the feat. She has alternative explanations for Superman's demonstrations of his vision, hearing, and strength as well. Only after Superman uses his X-ray vision to see a tiny fragment of glass behind her eyes that is robbing her of her sight and surgically removes it himself does Alice finally believe in the Man of Steel. Alice's father, who mistakenly believed he caused her blindness, returns, making for a happy conclusion that causes Superman to proclaim, "nothing I've ever done before has made me so glad that I really am a Superman!" (S No. 96, Mar 1955: "The Girl Who Didn't Believe in Superman!")
