A cunning gangland chieftain, a chess grand master before he turned to crime, who plans his crimes like chess games, using special pieces on a chess board to represent the objects to be stolen and the obstacles and opponents, such as Superman, to be overcome. In May-June 1949, having observed that Superman will invariably rescue Lois Lane from danger before attempting to apprehend either himself or his henchmen, Check kidnaps Lois Lane and uses Brenda Manning, an unemployed actress and Lois Lane look-alike, as his dupe in a series of elaborate charades designed to make it appear that "Lois Lane" is in jeopardy each time he and his henchmen are making a getaway. Superman ultimately apprehends the villains, however, during a robbery at the International Chess Championship (WF No. 40: "The Two Lois Lanes!"). (TGSB)
