The publisher of the Daily Planet who, in December 1949, orders Perry White to fire Clark Kent and hire a more dynamic reporter in his stead on the ground that "the newspaper business is no place for shrinking violets!" Kent successfully forestalls his dismissal --and safeguards the reportial position he sees as vital to his work as Superman-- by temporarily affecting a courageous personality until his Daily Planet has decided to retain him, and then perpetrating an elaborate ruse to explain away his short-lived change of behavior (Act No. 139: "Clark Kent ... Daredevil!").
