The cover of Superboy No. 76, featuring the 1st appearance of Beppo the Super-Monkey.
Beppo (the Super-Monkey). A playful Kryptonian laboratory monkey which survived the explosion of the planet
Krypton—as the result of having been launched into outer space in an experimental space capsule—and ultimately landed on Earth, where, like any native of Krypton, it acquired super-powers like
Superman's and became known as Beppo the Super-Monkey. Beppo wears a colorful red and blue costume modeled after Superman's and is a member of the
Legion of Super-Pets. When
Metropolis television station WMET-TV inaugurates its new "Our American Heroes" series with a program honoring Superman, "our greatest American hero," Beppo appears on the show along with three of the other super-pets—
Krypto the Superdog,
Comet the Super-Horse, and
Streaky the Super-Cat—to help pay tribute to the Man of Steel (Act No. 309, Feb 1964: "The Superman Super-Spectacular!"). In April 1965 Beppo journeys through the time barrier to the mid-nineteenth century to help Superman and the other super-pets teach a well-deserved lesson to "cruel junkman" Cyrus Atwill (S No. 176/1: "The Revenge of the Super-Pets!").
