The look and inspiration for Metropolis, the city is undoubtedly based on Fritz Lang's landmark SF film'' Metropolis'', which was inspired by director Lang seeing the skyscrapers of New York City for the first time.

Metropolis

A great, sprawling city that is home to Superman, the Daily Planet, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Clark Kent and Perry White and the Superman Museum. Many of Luthor's Lairs are located in and on the outskirts of the city.

It has been liked to it's sister city Gotham City in terms of size but with far less crime due to it's protector, Superman. And it is not unlike New York City in many depictions in the Chronicles especially those animated tales produced by the Fleischer Studios during the 1940s.
