Willis Fotheringay

The noted artist commissioned by the U.S. government to design a special Superman commemorative postage stamp in August

1954. Anxious to avoid the use of a frontal view of himself on the stamp for fear that the post-office cancellations of

towns with double 0’s in their names will in effect superimpose “eyeglasses” on his face and risk betrayal of his Clark

Kent identity, Superman is relieved when artist Fotheringay finally selects a profile view of Superman standing on a beach

alongside a glistening glass castle that he has just fashioned for a happy youngster out of super-compressed sand (S No.

91/1: “The Superman Stamp!”).
