Superman Island
A distinctive man-made island, fashioned by Superman In his own image off the coast of Metropolis, where, despite the great personal danger to himself, the Man of Steel assembles a vast hoard of Kryptonite as his humanitarian response to a pronouncement by Professor Vanley of Metropolis University to the effect that “kryptonite would yield perpetual atomic power†and therefore offer a permanent solution to mankind’s growing energy needs. However, when Professor Vanley discovers that kryptonite “crumbles and destroys any generator†in which it is used and is therefore of no practical value as fuel, Superman tears Superman Island from its moorings and hurls it into outer space, where “It’ll be a new star, wandering forever in the vast universe.. - a Superman star!†(Act No. 224, Jan 1957: “The Secret of Superman Island!â€).
Superman Island is also the name of a maximum security prison designed by Carl Draper (later, the Master Jailer) and named "Superman Island" after the Man of Steel adds a system that floats the facility high in the air (S No. 331, Jan 1979: "Lockup at 20,000 Feet!").
