Karate Kid
Val Armorr, an orphan from 30th century Tokyo, is an expert on all types of martial arts and the various sciences of hand-to-hand combat. Taking the name Karate Kid, Val is inducted into the Legion of Super-Heroes after a try-out where he not only shows his power by slicing through metal beams, but, ultimately, by challenging Superboy himself. Using uncanny quickness and weight-shifting, Karate Kid is able to evade attacks and throw the Boy of Steel into a wall with tremendous force. Even after Val is eventually defeated, Superboy says, "anyone who can give me that kind of a tussle belongs in the Legion!" (Adv No. 346, Jul 1966: "One of Us is a Traitor!").
