The Black Sheep of the House of El
Kru-El is a Kryptonian terrorist who invented a host of forbidden weapons. Ultimately his own cousin Jor-El, Superman's father, managed to stop his terrorist plots and sentenced him to the Phantom Zone. Jor-El then sealed Kru-El's forbidden weapons in a box and shot them into outer space. This box would end up falling to Earth many years later. When Kru-El manages to escape the Phantom Zone with his fellow Kryptonian criminals, General Zod and Jax-Ur, he uses his Super-Vision power to locate the box on Earth, under the sea, while Superman is away in a Time Travel adventure in the past. Among the weapons that Kru-El invented were a Force-Beam device which shoots a ray which sets up a super-force field around planets which can block people from penetrating the time-barrier and a "Disintegrater" Gun which can vaporize anything into nothingness (Act No. 298, Mar 1963: "The Super-Powers of Lex Luthor!").
