Toran
An brutal European aggressor nation which is at war with the peace-loving country of Galonia. Indeed, when "the armed battalions of Toran unexpectedly swoops down upon a lesser nation, Galonia, " fear mounts that "once again the world is being flung into a terrible conflagration!" Lois Lane and Clark Kent are sent to Europe as war correspondents to cover the conflict for their newspaper, but it is Superman who thwarts a sinister plot to win "the sympathy of the democracies" for the Toranian cause (See Lita Laverne) (Act No. 22, Mar 1940). Only later does Superman learn that "a fiend named Luthor deliberately fomented this war for evil purposes" as part of his heinous scheme "to engulf the entire [European] continent in bloody warfare" (Act No. 23, Apr 1940).
