By the end of the 1980s, Jason Todd (whose background varied greatly between the original history and the post-Crisis events) was murdered by the Joker.  Superman aided Batman in apprehending the arch-criminal, but shortly thereafter, the Batman fell into an abyss of near-insanity.  A young man named Tim Drake, however, helped him back to his normal state and eventually attained the rank of Robin, eventually donning a redesigned costume.

Drake is even more highly regarded in the DC Universe than Grayson was at his age. So much so that in the events of Infinite Crisis, Superman put him in charge of making sure the civilians were all right.
