A cunning gangland chieftain, a chess grand master before he turned to crime, who plans his crimes like chess games, using special pieces on a chess board to represent the objects to be stolen and the obstacles and opponents, such as [[Superman]], to be overcome. In May-June 1949, having observed that Superman will invariably rescue [[Lois Lane]] from danger before attempting to apprehend either himself or his henchmen, Check kidnaps Lois Lane and uses [[Brenda Manning]], an unemployed actress and Lois Lane look-alike, as his dupe in a series of elaborate charades designed to make it appear that "Lois Lane" is in jeopardy each time he and his henchmen are making a getaway. Superman ultimately apprehends the villains, however, during a robbery at the International Chess Championship (WF No. 40: "The Two Lois Lanes!").
