The Colosseum
A gigantic amphitheater in Rome which was erected by the emperors Vespasian and Titus (69-81 A.D.) and remains one of the world’s great landmarks. Used for gladiatorial games and other entertainments, it measured 620 by 513 feet and had a seating capacity of about 50,000. The Colosseum is stolen—along with other world-famous monuments—by the Kryptonian villain Mala in July 1954 as part of his elaborate scheme to wreak vengeance on Superman by destroying the planet Earth (Act No. 194: “The Outlaws from Krypton!â€).
