Swami Riva

An unscrupulous fortune-teller and swindler --in reality a onetime carnival sharpie whose real name is Dan Rivers --who, not realizing that the decorative jewel in his turban is actually Kryptonite, comes to believe that he is the possessor of some extraordinary occult power that enables him to weaken and paralyze Superman merely by approaching him. Swami Riva --who, according to Superman No 61/3, is the first villain ever to employ Kryptonite, however unwittingly, as a weapon against Superman --is apprehended by Superman in November-December 1949, along with a gang of hijackers who have hired the evil swami to protect them from Superman ("Superman Returns to Krypton!").
