Adam Strange was at one point an archaeologist on a dig in South America. When he met up with hostile natives, while he was running for his life, he jumped across a ravine and landed on a strange planet many light years away. He was beamed away a [[Zeta Beam]] sent from the planet [[Rann]], which orbited the star Alpha Centauri, in an effort to institute communications with Earth. Bizarre circumstances had altered the Zeta Beam into a teleportation ray.
