From September-October 1944, the date of his textual debut (S No. 30/3: "The Mysterious Mr. Mxyztplk!"), through March 1955, [[Mr. Mxyzptlk]]'s name is consistently rendered as Mr. Mxyztplk, i.e, with the letters 'p' and 't' transposed (S No. 96/2: "Mr. Mxyztlpk--Mayor of Metropolis!"; and others). In September 1955, however, both spellings are employed (Act No. 208: "The Magic of Mr. Mxyztplk"), and, from August 1959 onward, the new spelling-Mxyzptlk-is used exclusively (S No. 131/1: "The Menace of Mr. Mzyzptlk!"; and others).

The original spelling and appearance of this character are later attributed to the Earth-2 version of the character (See [[Superman of Earth-2]]).

An imp from the Fifth Dimension of [[Zrfff]] with magical abilities which [[Superman]] is vulnerable to. He can be forced back to his home dimension if he says his name backwards which is [[Kltpzyxm]]. His many pranks have plagued the Superman family for decades and yet all his topsy-turvy magical, nightmarish alterations of reality return completely to normal once the imp has been banished.

In July 1980 [[Superman]] returns from an interstellar mission to discover that the world he knew has been replaced by one in which everyone has been replaced with a counterpart of the opposite gender. Instead of a female [[Lois Lane]] this world's [[Daily Planet]] has a male reporter names Louis Lane. Instead of [[Jimmy Olsen]] there is Jenny Olsen. [[Wonder Woman]] is replaced by Wonder Warrior and so on. And the greatest hero on this world is Superwoman. There is also a Clara Kent who strangely is not the same person as Superwoman. In fact unlike her male counterpart in the real world, Clark Kent, Clara Kent is just an ordinary person.

Based on this fact as well as the fact that a file on Superwoman's enemies showed a male Mxyzptlk allowed [[Superman]] to deduce that Mxyzptlk was behind this madness. Mxyzptlk was too vain to alter himself in any way so even in this world of reversed genders he was still male and [[Superwoman]] and Clara Kent were different people because Mxyzptlk was, inspite of his incredible powers, unaware that Superman and Clark Kent were one and the same.

When [[Superman]] confronts Mxyzptlk, he uses the magic lasso he took from Wonder Warrior to force Mxyzptlk to say his name backwards causing him to return to the 5th dimension and undoing his spell over the earth. When Superman returns to the [[Daily Planet]], he is shocked to see [[Louis Lane]], but it is not the same Louis Lane from the gender reversed earth: It's Lois's cousin from Pittsdale (S No. 349: "The Turnabout Trap!").

Mxy's 30th Century descendant, [[Mxyzptlk 5]], is a member of the [[Adult Legion of Super-Heroes]].
