Superman learns of these events when he is accidentally transported by historians to the Twenty-Fourth Century of this parallel Earth along with George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and George Custer (Act No. 399/1, Apr 1971: "Superman, You're Dead ...Dead ...Dead!"). Clark Kent and Superboy's best friend. While on a camping trip, Pete discover's Clark's true identity but keeps it to himself. He aides Superboy in secret unbeknownst to him (SB No. 90/3, Jul 1961: "Pete Ross' Super Secret").

When Superboy, Mon-El, Shadow Lass and Duo Damsel (see Legion of Super-Heroes) are trapped in 20th Century Smallville by Mordru the Merciless, Pete's knowledge of Superboy's secret identity restores the Legionaires' memory. As a reward Mon-El hypnotizes Superboy into forgetting that Pete knows his secret because Mon-El realizes that Pete's knowledge of Clark's identity will save Superman in their future lives (Adv No. 369, Jun 1968, "Mordru the Merciless!").

Then and there, Ross vowed to keep his knowledge secret, even from Superman, and never reveal it to anyone else. On occasion, without Kent's knowledge, Ross even masqueraded as the young Clark Kent to help him preserve his secret identity.

Ross did eventually reveal his knowledge of Kent's secret when both men were adults, to recruit Superman to rescue Ross's son, Jonathan Ross (DCCP No. 13, Sep 1979: "To Live in Peace--Nevermore!"). Jon had been kidnapped by an alien species from the planet Nyrvn in order to be trained to fight in one of their perpetual wars. Superman atempted a rescue but was dissuaded by four members of the Legion of Super-Heroes—Saturn Girl, Lightning Lad, Sun Boy and Dawnstar—who convinced him that their historical records showed that Jon Ross would eventually play a pivotal role in an interstellar war. Unable to accept the reasons, Pete Ross suffered a psychotic break and used technology developed by Lex Luthor to reach into the past, kidnap Superboy, bring him to the present and switch consciousnesses with him (DCCP No. 14, Oct 1979: "Judge, Jury...and No Justice!"). In Superboy's body, Ross kidnapped Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane, Perry White, Lana Lang and Steve Lombard and tried to compel them to act as "jury", passing a death sentence on Superman, who had been restrained in kryptonite shackles. The intervention of Krypto unravelled the plan and Superman and Superboy (his consciousness in the body of the adult Pete Ross) co-operated to reverse the effects of Luthor's machines. Pete Ross was committed to a mental institution where he passed his time tearing up Superman posters.

Emotionally tormented by this result, Superman eventually decided to ignore the request of the LSH and retrieve Jon Ross, reuniting him with his father. This put Pete Ross on the road to recovery (DCCP No. 25, Sep 1980: "Judgment Night").

Bryan Ekers: Added references to Superman #141 related to Kandor

Kandor.

Originally the capital city of Krypton before Kryptonopolis.

Kandor survived the destruction of its native planet as the result of having been stolen sometime prior to the cataclysm by the space villain Brainiac, who reduced the city to microscopic size and preserved it, people and buildings intact, inside a glass bottle aboard his spacecraft. It remained there for many years until July of 1958 when Brainiac came to Earth and attempted to add Metropolis to his bottle-city collection. Superman foiled Brainiac, recovered Kandor, and placed it inside his Fortress of Solitude for safekeeping.

Inside the bottle city, life goes on much as it did prior to the destruction of Krypton. Although restoration to their normal size remains the heartfelt wish of all Kandorians, Superman has not yet succeeded, despite years of effort, in finding a way to enlarge the city safely. He has, however, on occasion managed to reduce himself in size temporarily for the purpose of visiting the bottle city and undertaking adventures there.

Nestled securely on a niche inside the Fortress of Solitude, the bottle city of Kandor is "the most amazing exhibit in Superman's Fortress" and "the prize of his collection" of curiosities and artifacts from throughout the universe.

According to Superman No. 158, the peaceful city of Kandor, capital of Krypton, was "a place of beauty and happiness" until the dark day when Brainiac, "the evilest villain of space," appeared over the city in his saucerlike spacecraft, reduced it to "microscopic size" with his diabolical "hyper-force ray," and then soared away again into outer space with the captive city of Kandor imprisoned aboard his craft inside a large glass bottle.

Although the texts seem to agree that the theft of Kandor occured "years before" Krypton exploded, it is not possible to pinpoint the date of the theft with any real accuracy, though it occured shortly after the wedding of Jor-El and Lara but before the conception of their son, Kal-El. At the time of the theft, Superman was living on Krypton after accidentally traveling back in time. Getting a job as Jor-El's assistant, Superman (using his birth name of Kal-El, and subsequently inspiring Lara to name a future son after him) constructed a super-robot and was using it to construct a large ark that would save "thousands" of Kryptonians. Brainiac's theft removed the robot and the ark and there was insufficient time and materiel to rebuild either. Superman himself escaped Krypton's doom by an unlikely accident involving a prop rocket for a film project and a fire breathing "space creature". (Superman #141)

Despite the fact that by stealing their city Brainiac inadvertently rescued the people of Kandor from the cataclysmic doom that befell the rest of their planet, the Kandorians still regard him as "the foulest villain in the universe" for having wrenched their city from its native planet and for having doomed them, perhaps forever, to lilliputian size.

It is the goal of all Kandorians to see their city enlarged to normal size so that they can live out their lives outside the bottle, either on Earth of on some distant planet.

The picturesque city of Kandor sits inside a large "bell-jar" in Superman's Fortress of Solitude. According to Superman No. 134, "Brainiac made the walls of super-hard, unbreakable glass."

The bottle containing the city is sealed by a large "cork", more accurately described as a "super-hard metal stopper." By August 1965 a doorway has been installed in the stopper to facilitate "easier exit from the giant bottle" for members of the Supermen Emergency Squad and other Kandorians.

Safeguarding the city of Kandor and its lilliputian population is one of Superman's gravest responsibilities. "I have to check that city-in-the-bottle regularly," muses the Man of Steel in January 1960, "to see that the tiny people inside it are safe!"

Watching over the city consists mainly of conducting periodic checks of the air hoses and related apparatus which provide the Kandorians with a steady supply of air.

Inside the bottle city, "Krypton's gravity conditions are duplicated" to allow the Kandorians to live normal lives in the environment characteristic of their native planet. Therefore, in Superman's words, "The Kandorians must be constantly supplied with air that is of the same composition as the air on their native Krypton - so I always check to make certain the air mixture is right."

Indeed, life in the bottle city goes on today much as it did before Brainiac stole it, with the Kandorians "going about their daily business" almost as though their native planet had never exploded. Kryptonese, the language of Krypton, is still spoken, and Kandorian scientific progress has continued apace despite the limitations imposed by the artificial glass-walled environment.

Kandor is governed by the Kandorian Council, a body of distinguished citizens apparently modeled after the form of planetary government that prevailed on Krypton prior to the cataclysm.

The city proper is dominated by such institutions as the Museum of Kryptonian History, a well-stocked library, the Kandor City Zoo, and the majestic Hall of Justice, where, once each year, the Phantom Zone Parole Board meets to consider the pleas of Phantom Zone prisoners seeking parole. Those prisoners deemed worthy of parole are released from the Phantom Zone to begin new lives as Kandorian citizens.

Outside the city is a neatly landscaped suburban region characterized by elegant mansions and fine houses, and beyond the suburbs are "strange forests" filled with Kryptonian wildlife and "weird vegetation."

In February, the people of Kandor celebrate Krypton Day, a holiday whose precise significance is never stated in the chronicles. Once each year, in either December or January, they bow their heads in silence in solemn commemoration of "the anniversary of the destruction of Krypton." In April, the Kandorians hold ceremonies marking the Day of Truth, a holiday once celebrated by all Kryptonians, in which they honor the memory of Val-Lor, a valiant Kryptonian who, by courageously speaking out against the "ruthless swarm of alien invaders" who had invaded Krypton and enslaved its people, inspired his fellow Kryptonians to revolt against their alien oppressors and drive the aliens from their planet.

Kandor's "greatest hero" is Superman and there are several statues of him in and about the city. Outside the bottle city, Superman's dual identity is a closely guarded secret, but inside Kandor the fact that Clark Kent is Superman is "known to all Kandorians."

Just as the Kandorians keep a watchful eye on Superman by means of their sophisticated Earth monitors, the Man of Steel keeps in close communication with his friends in Kandor. In Superman's Fortress of Solitude, a red light on an intricate "monitoring maching" lights up in the event of a "Kandor emergency," and a special "Kandor-scope" monitor screen, sometimes used in conjunction with an operator's headphone and mouthpiece, enables him to carry on simultaneous visual and aural communication with his Kandorian allies.

In order to enter Kandor, either to visit his friends or to undertake adventures there, Superman must first reduce himself to microscopic size. He originally accomplished this through various means, but eventually settled on the "shrinking ray" confiscated from Brainiac.

Inside Kandor, where "Krypton's gravity conditions are duplicated," Superman becomes an ordinary human being, without super-powers, although he regains use of his powers the moment he exits from the bottle and re-enters the earthly environment. Kryptonite has no effect on Superman while he remains in Kandor, simply because he is only an ordinary mortal there.

Similarly, any Kandorian who emerges from the bottle city instantly acquires super-powers identical to Superman's, along with vulnerability to the various forms of kryptonite.

In the course of an Kandorian adventure in January 1963, during a period when it is unsafe for Superman to move about in Kandor due to the lies that have been spread about him among the people by the "fanatic scientist" Than-Ol, Superman and Jimmy Olsen decide to emulate their friends Batman and Robin by adopting a pair of alternate identities and working together as a team. Inspired by the names and plumage of a pair of Kandorian birds - a "nightwing" and a "flamebird" - owned by their friend Nor-Kan, Superman and Jimmy adopt the alternate identities of Nightwing and Flamebird and fashion a pair of colorful costumes evocative of the plumage of the two Kandorian birds.

Beneath his lavish home in the Kandorian suburbs, Nor-Kan has constructed a "secret under-ground lab" - with a camouflaged entrance built into a grassy hillside - to prevent intruders from tampering with his delicate scientific instruments. With Nor-Kan's blessing, Nightwing and Flamebird christen this laboratory the "nightcave" and transform it into their secret subterranean headquarters, while simultaneously converting Nor-Kan's automobile into a swift, specially equipped "nightmobile."

By the time this Kandorian adventure draws to a close, Nightwing and Flamebird - the so-called Dynamic Duo of Kandor - have revealed their true identities to the Kandorian people and the Kandorians have erected a colorful statue of the two heroes in the heart of the city.

Kandor is the home of the Supermen Emergency Squad, the Look-a-Like Squad and crime fighting defenders, Nightwing and Flamebird.

Supergirl's parents, Zor-El and Alura, after being rescued from the Survival Zone reside in Kandor.

The term used to designate any surviving fragment of the exploded planet Krypton, home world of Superman. These varieties of kryptonite are similarly hazardous to Supergirl, Krypto the Superdog, Beppo the Supermonkey, and all other surviving natives of Krypton, unless otherwise noted. (edited and modified from TGSB)

Full list of every type of Kryptonite that has appeared in the chronicles is as follows:

0. K-Metal: A prototype Kryptonite from the famous unpublished Golden Age Superman story by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster called "The K-Metal from Krypton!". It has the same weakening effect on Kryptonians as Green Kryptonite, with the additional effect of temporarily granting tremendous strength and possibly other super-powers to normal non-powered people. Part of this idea was used for X-Kryptonite in Superman Family No. 203

1. Green Kryptonite: Green Kryptonite, is fatal to superpowered Kryptonians but harmless to non-superpowered Kryptonians,
It induces lassitude and inertia followed by death if not removed in time from Superman's presence. (TGSB)

2. Red Kryptonite: Red Kryptonite inflicts bizarre and unpredictable—albeit temporary and nonfatal—symptoms, as when it divides Superman into twins or transforms him into an infant or a giant ant.(TGSB) It's effects last only 48 hours and is never repeated on the same Kryptonian again.

3. Gold Kryptonite: Gold Kryptonite would permanently rob a Kryptonian of his super-powers were he ever to be exposed to its radiations. Phantom Zone escapee Quex-Ul suffered this effect (S No. 157), as did a Lex Luthor-created Superman clone (Act No. 500).(TGSB)

4. Blue Kryptonite: Blue Kryptonite is toxic only to superpowered Bizarro creatures.(TGSB)

5. White Kryptonite: White Kryptonite is harmful only to plant life, though it can also affect some vareties of microbe.(TGSB)

6. Jewel Kryptonite: First appeared in Action Comics No. 310. Created by Jax-Ur of the Phantom Zone. "That chunk of Jewel K in orbit magnifies our mental commands and converts them into energy beams which detonate any explosive material we desire."

7. X-Kryptonite: Accidentally created by Supergirl, it gives Streaky the Supercat powers beyond those of mere mortal cats. It is revealed in Superman Family No. 203 that X-Kryptonite can weaken superpowered Kryptonians as well.

8. Red-Green Kryptonite: Red-Green Kryptonite first appeared in the story "The Menace of Red-Green Kryptonite!" in Act No. 275.

9. Anti-Kryptonite: A type of Kryptonite which affects only non-superpowered Kryptonians. Initially created to explain a discrepancy in the origin story of Supergirl (namely how the non-superpowered Krypton survivors in Argo City could be affected by lethal Kryptonite radiation).

10. Slow Kryptonite: Created by Metallo. It is "able to slow down the rate of particle emissions enough to affect humans as it does Kryptonians." (B&B No. 175) Although the effect on Batman was agonizing and impressive, the effect (if any) on Kryptonians was not documented.

11. Kryptonite-Plus: First appeared in Action Comics No. 350. "a super-powerful isotope that will finish off Kryptonians in minutes".

12. Magno-Kryptonite: First appeared in SPJO No. 92. Created by Truff, from the planet Pyron. "It [clings] with unbreakable force to anything that comes from Krypton".

13. Silver Kryptonite: A fake Kryptonite created by Jimmy Olsen as a hoax for Superman's Silver Anniversary.

14. Yellow Kryptonite: A synthetic Kryptonite created by Lex Luthor as a hoax to mentally torture Superman. Luthor claimed to have a machine capable of creating hovering Kryptonite globes of various colors, including the previously unknown yellow variety. All the globes were in fact fakes, though they managed to successfully fool a Superman robot.

15. False Kryptonite: Created by Supergirl using magic from a wishing well from a piece of Green Kryptonite, it is perfectly harmless.

16. Synthetic Kryptonite: Synthetic versions of Green Kryptonite created in laboratories.

17. Mutated kryptonite: A white card with a Kryptonian symbol on it used by the villain Zo-Mar was made from an unnamed form of mutated kryptonite that robbed any Kryptonian of his powers when he was very near it, but which was not otherwise harmful and had no permanent effect. (DCCP No. 84).

Whenever the word Kryptonite appears in this encyclopedia without a specific color designation, by default it will be Green Kryptonite, the most common variety. (See Superman [ section 7.1, kryptonite ].)
When Superboy, Mon-El, Shadow Lass and Duo Damsel (see Legion of Super Heroes) are trapped in 20th Century Smallville by Mordru the Merciless, Ross's knowledge of Superboy's secret identity restores the Legionaires' memory. As a reward Mon-El hypnotized Superboy into forgetting that Ross knew his secret because Mon-El realizes that Ross's knowledge of Kent's identity will save Superman in their future lives.

Ross did eventually reveal his knowledge of Kent's secret when both men were adults, to recruit Superman to rescue Ross's son, Jon Ross (DC Comics Presents #13). Jon had been kidnapped by an alien species in order to be trained to fight in one of their perpetual wars. Superman atempted a rescue but was dissuaded by four members of the Legion of Super-Heroes (Saturn Girl, Lightning Lad, Sun Boy and Dawnstar) who convinced him that their historical records showed that Jon Ross would eventually play a pivotal role in an interstellar war. Unable to accept the reasons, Pete Ross suffered a psychotic break and used technology developed by Lex Luthor to reach into the past, kidnap Superboy, bring him to the present and switch consciousnesses with him (DC Comics Presents #14). In Superboy's body, Ross attempted to kill Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane and Perry White and use kryptonite weapons against Superman.

This put Pete Ross on the road to recovery (DC Comics Presents #25).

Originally thought to be the descendant of the original Brainiac, Brainiac 5 is actually descended from Brainiac II (Vril Dox), who was adopted by Brainiac I to hide his origin.

Brainiac 5 (real name: Querl Dox) is a member of the Legion of Super Heroes in 30th Century Metropolis (Act No. 276/2, May 1961: "The Three Super Girl-Friends"; and others.) Possessed of a 12th level intelligence commmon to his homeworld of Colu his many inventions have included the Legionnaires' time bubble, the cure for Mon-El's lead poisoning, flying belts, flight rings and Computo.

Both Supergirl and Brainiac 5 applied for Legion membership at the same thing but Supergirl was rejected as Red Kryptonite had turned her into a Superwoman and over the 21 age limit for membership.

As depicted in The Chronicles repeatedly, Brainiac 5 and Supergirl are sweet on each other.

When Superman visited the 30th century to answer a summons from the Adult Legion of Super Heroes, he was greeted by their leader - Brainiac 5.

Note: the original future timeframe of the Legion of Super Heroes was the late twenty-first century, hence only four generations seperated Brainiac 5 from his namesake "ancestor". The legion stories were later retconned to the 30th century, though the character's name was unchanged.
Kryptonite

Bryan Ekers:

The term used to designate any surviving fragment of the exploded planet Krypton, home world of Superman. These varieties of kryptonite are similarly hazardous to Supergirl, Krypto the Superdog, Beppo the Supermonkey, and all other surviving natives of Krypton, unless otherwise noted. (edited and modified from TGSB)

Full list of every type of (pre-Crisis) Kryptonite that has appeared in the chronicles is as follows:

Phantom Zone escapee Quex-Ul suffered this effect (Superman #157), as did a Lex Luthor-created Superman clone (Action Comics #500).(TGSB)

4. Blue Kryptonite: Blue kryptonite is toxic only to superpowered Bizarro creatures.(TGSB)

5. White Kryptonite: White kryptonite is harmful only to plant life, though it can also affect some vareties of microbe.(TGSB)

6. Jewel Kryptonite: 1st appeared in Act No.

203 that can weaken superpowered Kryptonians as well.

8. Red-Green Kryptonite: Red-Green Kryptonite 1st appeared in the story "The Menace of Red-Green Kryptonite!" in Act No. 275.

It is "able to slow down the rate of particle emissions enough to affect humans as it does Kryptonians." B&B No. 175 Although the effect on Batman was agonizing and impressive, the effect (if any) on Kryptonians was not documented.

11. Kryptonite-Plus: First appeared in Act No. 350. "a super-powerful isotope that will finish off [Kryptonians] in minutes".

Luthor claimed to have a machine capable of creating hovering Kryptonie globes of various colors, including the previously unknown yellow variety. All the globes were in fact fakes, though they managed to successfuly fool a Superman robot.

15. False Kryptonite: Created by Supergirl using magic from a wishing well from a piece of Green Kryptonite, it is perfectly harmless.

16. Synthetic Kryptonite: Synthetic versions of Green Kryptonite created in laboratories.

17. Mutated kryptonite: A white card with a Kryptonian symbol on it used by the villain Zo-Mar was made from an unnamed form of mutated kryptonite that robbed any Kryptonian of his powers when he was very near it, but which was not otherwise harmful and had no permenant effect. (DCCP No. 84).

Whenever the word kryptonite appears in this encyclopedia without a specific color designation, by default it will be green kryptonite, the most common variety. (See Superman [ section 7.1, kryptonite ].)

With the Post-Crisis reboot, Kryptonite radiation was evident on Krypton as the planet's explosion approached and had begun poisoning the inhabitants. The vast majority of the universe's kryptonite is forming a planet-sized debris field orbiting the planet's red sun.
